TRANSPORT & TICKETS

ATM WEBSITE: https://www.atm.it/en/Pages/default.aspx

Contactless Payment (Recommended): You can pay for your journey by simply tapping your credit card, debit card, or smartphone (Apple Pay/Google Pay) at the dedicated turnstiles when entering and exiting the stations. The system automatically applies the correct fare (€2.20 for the urban area).

Important for Groups: Each passenger must use their own individual contactless card or device. The system does not allow multiple travellers to use the same payment method for the same journey.

Paper Tickets: Standard tickets are available at automated vending machines in every station. A single ticket costs €2.20 and is valid for 90 minutes across the entire urban network (including Piola, Centrale, and Duomo).

Multi-day Passes: If you plan to use public transport frequently, you may consider a 24-hour ticket (€7.60) or a 3 days ticket (€15.50). These passes offer unlimited travel on all metros, trams, and buses within the urban area and are often the most cost-effective solution for a 4-day stay. They can be purchased at any station's vending machine or via the ATM Milano app.

Validation: Please remember to tap your card or scan your ticket both at the start and at the end of your journey to ensure the turnstiles open and to avoid fines.

THINGS TO DO IN MILAN

VISIT THE CITY CENTRE

The conference venue is located near the Piola station on the M2 (Green Line). To reach the city center from the Politecnico, you may take the M2 line (direction Assago/Abbiategrasso) and transfer at Loreto station to the M1 (Red Line) toward Rho Fiera/Bisceglie. From there, exit at Duomo to visit the Milan Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and La Scala Theatre, or continue to Cairoli for the Sforza Castle and Conciliazione for The Last Supper. The Brera Picture Gallery and the Botanical Garden are within short walking distance of both the Duomo and Cairoli stations.

Alternatively, by staying on the M2 (Green Line), you can reach the Sant’Ambrogio station to visit the historic Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio and the Leonardo da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology.

Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano)
A masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the symbolic heart of the city. It is one of the largest churches in the world, renowned for its intricate spires and stunning white marble façade.

The Crypt of San Sepolcro
A hidden gem just steps away from the Duomo, offering a brief but profound journey into the city's ancient past. This underground wonder is the true "umbilicus" (center) of ancient Milan. Built on the site of the Roman Forum, its floor is paved with white marble stones from the 4th century.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Often called "Milan’s drawing room," this elegant 19th-century glass-vaulted arcade connects Piazza del Duomo to La Scala and houses luxury boutiques and historic cafés.

La Scala Theatre (Teatro alla Scala)
One of the most prestigious opera houses globally. Since its inauguration in 1778, it has hosted the world’s greatest composers and performers.

Brera Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca di Brera)
One of Italy’s most significant art museums, hosting an extraordinary collection of Italian masterpieces from the 13th to the 20th century. Online reservation is highly recommended to guarantee entry. Tickets can be purchased at: https://pinacotecabrera.org/en/

Brera Botanical Garden
Located directly behind the Brera Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca), this historic 18th-century garden is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. Admission to the Brera Botanical Garden is free of charge and no reservation is required.

Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco)
A majestic Renaissance fortress that once served as the seat of the Duchy of Milan. Today, it houses several important museums and art collections.

The Last Supper (Cenacolo Vinciano)
Leonardo da Vinci’s world-renowned mural, located in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is a pinnacle of Renaissance art. Booking is mandatory and must be done well in advance (often months) via the official website: https://cenacolovinciano.org/en/. Please note that tickets for The Last Supper are extremely limited and tend to sell out months in advance; we strongly recommend checking availability as soon as possible.

Sant'Ambrogio Basilica
A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture and one of the oldest churches in Milan (founded in 379 AD). It is dedicated to the city's patron saint, St. Ambrose. Conveniently located at the Sant'Ambrogio station on the M2 line.

National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci
Located in a 16th-century monastery, this museum houses an extensive collection of historical medical instruments and scientific artifacts. Of particular interest to medical professionals are the life-size models based on Leonardo da Vinci’s anatomical studies, showcasing the Renaissance intersection of art, biology, and early medical science

SHOPPING & SOUVENIRS

From the Politecnico, you can reach the city's premier shopping destinations by taking the M2 (Green Line) to Loreto, where you can explore Corso Buenos Aires, or by transferring to the M1 (Red Line) to reach San Babila for the Fashion Quadrilateral and Duomo for the La Rinascente department store.

Corso Buenos Aires
One of Europe’s longest shopping streets, ideal for high-street brands and located within walking distance of Centrale station.

The Fashion Quadrilateral
For luxury and high-end designers, explore the iconic Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele II & La Rinascente
This elegant pedestrian avenue represents the heart of Milanese shopping, stretching between Piazza del Duomo and San Babila under historic arcades; it is home to the flagship La Rinascente department store, a premier destination where luxury fashion and Italian design meet a sophisticated top-floor Food Market, featuring gourmet delicacies and a panoramic terrace with a close-up view of the Cathedral’s spires.

Marchesi 1824
One of the city’s oldest and most iconic pastry shops. We recommend visiting their stunning location in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (second floor) for artisanal chocolates and traditional sweets, presented in their signature sophisticated packaging.

Peck
Located in Via Spadari, just a short walk from the Duomo, this is Milan’s premier delicatessen since 1883. It offers the finest selection of Italian wines, cheeses, and gourmet delicacies, elegantly packaged and ideal for high-end souvenirs.

Brera District
Perfect for those seeking unique boutiques, artisanal products, and artistic perfumery in a historic setting. Accessible either by exiting at Lanza (on the M2 line) or via a short walk from Cairoli or La Scala.
